What is Gratitude?

Gratitude is counting our blessings, and feeling appreciative or thankful for what we have, rather than focussing on what we don’t have.

Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. The benefits of practising gratitude are numerous and range from better sleep to having a stronger immune system.

The Science of Gratitude

How to practise gratitude

1. Notice the good things in your life that you might sometimes take for granted, look for them, appreciate them.

  • Each day, think of 3 things you are grateful for.

  • Start a gratitude journal.

  • Practice gratitude rituals. E.g. say grace before a meal.

2. Savor the Feeling of thankfulness

The moment when you say to yourself, "Oh, wow, this is amazing!" or "How great is this!"  Pause. Notice and absorb that feeling of true, genuine gratitude. Savour your blessings in the moment they happen.

3. Express Gratitude

When you write down your gratitude or thank someone, you're also practicing the first two gratitude skills: you've noticed something good, and you've genuinely appreciated it.

  • Show your appreciation to someone who did something nice.

  • Express gratitude by doing a kindness.

  • Tell the people in your life how you feel, what they mean to you.
